Concern over the possible link to Health Issues from local Air Pollution has been an issue in this area for quite some time. One of the goals of this grant was to compile the data and studies that have been done in the area related to this.
The bulk of the information gathered was directly from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. (MADPH) They conducted 2 studies in this area:
Marblehead & Swampscott Breast Cancer, Luekemia, and Melanoma Study - 1999
A follow up study was conducted - where soil samples were taken, however the results have yet to be released.
In addition, they provide public access to data regarding many health issues for all of Massachusetts, as well as town specific data and served as our source for all health charts and tables presented.
In addition to the information from MADPH, Dr. Levy from the Harvard School of Public Health published a paper regarding the estimated health impacts due to the Salem Harbor Power Station.
