According to the charts, based on EPA modeling, background sources are the next largest source of air pollution in Essex County, contributing 138 tons (33%) of the Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) in our three target communities. Again, since these sources are out of the control of the communities, further research into the breakdown of this category and what contributes to it was not investigated as part of this study.
