Quantity: Criteria Air Pollutants
The Criteria Air Pollutants are ozone, particulate, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and lead. Ozone and particulate are monitored throughout the state, and information regarding actual levels is available for each county based on limited sampling locations. Ozone and lead are not typically included in the other reporting or estimating methods for Criteria Air Pollutants, and ammonia and VOC are often added-we refered to this new grouping as "category" pollutants in the chart below.
Since the most recent data for "Criteria" Air pollutants for all Sources is the EPA NEI from 1999, this along with its separate break out of just the “Major” sources is provided in the chart below. In addition, Major source data is available from MADEP Air Source Registrations for 2003 and is also included in the chart below. It should be noted that Major Sources only contribute a significant amount to the SO2 and NO2 emissions, and that on average the three target community sources in 2003 contributed about 30% to the total air emissions estimated for Major sources in 1999. One other interesting point is that the total emissions just from Major sources in the three target communities for Ammonia in 2003, is greater than the total for all Major sources in Essex County estimated in 1999.
