North Shore AIR

North Shore Air Inventory Report

Funded by the Environmental Protection Agency

MAJOR SOURCES

Major Sources are those which are large in size, are known to emit air pollutants, and are required to report emissions to the state and federal agencies.

In the three target communities, the major point sources that reported to the State of Massachusetts on toxic air emissions in 2003 under the Source Registration requirement are listed in the 2 tables below.  This data is self-reported by the companies, and includes most of the "Criteria Air Pollutants" – SO2 (the largest compound reported in our area due to Major Sources), NO2, CO, P10, and P25. However, it does not include ozone or lead (or these facilities did not have any emissions of these to report).  In addition, this report adds ammonia (NH3) and Volatile organic compounds (VOC) to the reported information due to their interactions in the environment to form ozone and particulates. It should also be noted that this particular report does not identify the individual VOC chemicals, nor does it quantify total or particular HAP chemicals.

Salem Power Plant

Major Sources Excluding the Salem Power Plant

Based on this information, Dominion’s Salem Harbor Power Station is still the largest air emitter reporting to the state in the three target communities (requiring a separate graph so as to allow the visual of the remaining sources).   There are, however, 15 other Major Air sources that currently report through this system.

Each of the three target towns experiences the following contribution of air pollution from these Major Sources:

2003

Without Power Plant

With Power Plant

Salem 96 tons (68%) 16014 tons (99.7%)
Beverly 42 tons (30%) 42 tons (0.3%)
Marblehead 3 tons (2%) 3 tons
TOTAL 141 tons   16,059 tons

In addition, several of these sources also used large enough quantities of chemicals in 2003 that they were required to submit EPA TRI and MA TURA reports, including amounts emitted to the air.
