Project Method

  • The NSAIR team engaged the community in compiling disjointed air pollution data from numerous State and Federal sources including the MA DPH, MA DEP, and the EPA–data that had never before been aggregated and examined together at the community level.

  • The team in collaboration with Salem State College nursing students and faculty compiled existing information on community health issues affected by air toxins.

  • NSAIR also used community volunteers who observed and verified pollution sources through a street-by-street mapping survey in the three communities.

  • The team created a report on www.healthlink.org  to relay its findings and present a clearer picture of the air pollution problem in the three communities. 

Project Goals

  • Gathered and consolidated information regarding local air toxics sources, pollutants, and quantities.

  • Gathered and consolidated information regarding health issues associated with pollutants.

  • Gathered and consolidated information regarding health issues identified in the area.

  • Conducted educational forums for the community on the information collected.

  • Prioritized needed action health issues, quantities emitted, and ability to influence change.

  • Developed method for duplication in other communities.
