Executive Summary continued: Next Steps-Call to Action
Based on the findings of this project and the reduction priorities identified the following next steps are recommended in order to pursue reduction opportunities.
Reduction of Mobiles Sources:
- Support the development of a Transportation Management Association (TMA) in the communities to garner local business support in the development of and promotion of improved transportation options to reduce commuter traffic.
- Promote and improve existing public transportation options (buses, trains, ferry) as well as walking and biking options.
- Pass Ordinances to require smart development that includes use of public transportation, and decreases single occupant vehicle traffic.
- Enforce and promote Anti-Idling policies.
- Purchase electric or "green" vehicles for town operations.
Reduction of Fossil Fuel Use at Salem Harbor Power Plant:
- Promote Energy Efficiency for Homeowners and Businesses.
- Support and Promote Renewable Energy purchase options.
- Support and Promote Renewable Energy development projects.
- Continue to require emmision controls and efficient operation of plant.
Reduction of Harmful Chemicals in Consumer Products:
- Promote and Support Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow (AHT) efforts.
- Educate and promote "green" alternatives for household items.
- Educate and promote "green" alternatives to pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides for lawn and building care.
- Ensure the Integrated Pest Management(IPM) programs are well written and followed in local school systems.
Reduction of Tetrachloroethylene Use at Drycleaners:
- Provide educational materials to local drycleaners on best practices, or alternative chemcials.
- Personally reduce use of drycleaners or seek "green" cleaners.
Reduction of Gasoline Service Station Emissions:
- Provide educational materials to local gas stations regarding emission reduction.
- Reduce travel miles and gas usage.
